A Prayer for Jesus to Calm the Storms of Life
By Vivian Bricker
Bible Reading:
“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’” (Mark 4:39-40).
Listen or Read Below:
A wave of stress washed over me as I heard the continual squeaking above my head. Mice again. Throughout my adult years, I have dealt with more mouse infestations than I can count. Living in an old house makes it a frequent problem. I called my dad and filled him in on the situation. While my dad reassured me that we would get it fixed, my anxiety levels soared.
Why do I have to deal with this again?
When will the problems ever stop?
Will I even be able to sleep tonight?
Most of us have dealt with our fair share of troubles. Whether that be a mouse infestation, the ending of a career, or an upcoming surgery, none of us is immune to problems. Amidst these dreadful times, God is with us (Psalm 23:1-6; Matthew 1:23).
During these storms of life, we can run to Him. In the shelter of His wings, we will find protection. Many things will try to prevent us from turning to the Lord, such as pride, doubt, and insecurities. We must challenge these things and trust God, even when it is hard (Proverbs 3:5-6).
The storms of life will not end anytime soon. We have to learn to cope with them. The best way to cope with these storms is to consult our Savior and Lord. We can find solace in prayer and Bible study.
The Bible tells us, “He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’” (Mark 4:39-40).
The Twelve Disciples were out with Jesus on a boat when a storm arose. Jesus was sleeping through the storm when the Twelve Disciples became afraid (Mark 4:38a). After awaking Him, they asked Him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” (Mark 4:38b).
Immediately, the Lord tells the wind and the waves to calm down. The wind and the waves obey. The ferocious storm transforms into a peaceful, tranquil haven. In response to their question, the Lord asks them why they are so afraid. He also questions if they still lack faith.
We are so similar to the Twelve Disciples. When a storm comes upon us, we instantly doubt the Lord. We question whether He cares, whether He will help us, or whether He will bring us deliverance. Rather than doubting Jesus, we must trust Him. Just as He calms the roaring waters, He can also calm the storms of our lives.
While He will not take us out of tough times, He will walk with us through them. What storms of life are you currently facing? Are they causing you to doubt Christ? Talk with Jesus about these storms today. Do not be afraid to share your real feelings with Him.
Let's Pray:
Dear Jesus,
There are many storms in my life right now. I am worried, stressed, and concerned over many things. When storms come into my life, I tend to doubt You. Like the Twelve Disciples, I question if You even care about me. Please help me to remember that You do care about me. In fact, You care about me so much that You died for my sins. How I praise You, Lord!
Thank You for loving me and walking through the storms of life with me. Although I know You may not bring me out of this storm, You will walk with me through it. You will experience everything with me. This gives me solace. I trust You with what is to come, Jesus. The storms of life may try to drown me, but You will also pull me out on the other side.
All glory, honor, and worship belong to You, Lord. Amen.

For a long time, rest felt less like a gift and more like a guilty indulgence — something to be earned, something to feel vaguely ashamed of, something that productive, faithful people did not really need. In a world that measures worth by output, the idea of stopping feels dangerously close to falling behind.
But what if rest is not optional? What if it was never meant to be? Tonight, lay down the hustle. Receive the gift. This is exactly what you were made for.
